You could look at JIP CC&C as a replacement for Unlimited Companions, and include a 'minimalist' set of MCM settings (keeping it minimalist by only listing what would be changed, probably) to keep it unobtrusive and to essentially get just the unlimited companions part. The script got updated at least once before the final game version was released.
